17/10/2019 (Agence Europe) – The Conference of Presidents (CoP) of the European Parliament approved on Wednesday 16 October the appointment of Romanian Laura Codruţa Kövesi as head of the European Public Prosecutor's Office (see EUROPE 12335/9), without deciding in the end to put her to a vote at the next plenary session. Parliament supported the Romanian candidate from the beginning of the negotiations until an agreement was reached in September, after the EU Council’s decision to support Mrs Kövesi in place of the French candidate Jean-François Bohnert (see EUROPE 12331/5). The EU Council, for its part, validated her appointment on 14 October (see EUROPE 12348/18). Laura Codruţa Kövesi thus becomes the first European Chief Prosecutor, with a non-renewable seven-year term of office. (MF)
