EU relaxes arms embargo on Central African Republic to transpose a UN Security Council resolution

The EU Council decided on Thursday 17 October to extend the exemptions to the arms embargo imposed on the Central African Republic since 2013.

In doing so, the EU transposes UN Security Council Resolution 2488 adopted on 12 September 2019 to extend the exemptions.

Among other exemptions, the embargo shall not apply to the sale, supply, transfer or export of arms and related material, as well as to the provision of technical assistance or financing and financial assistance intended exclusively for the support for the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), Union missions and French forces deployed in the CAR, as well as forces from other United Nations Member States providing training or assistance.

This EU Council Decision (amending Decision 2013/798/CFSP concerning restrictive measures against the Central African Republic) was adopted by written procedure. (Original version in French by Aminata Niang)
