14/10/2019 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 14 October, the EU Council adopted conclusions aimed at marking the EU's renewed commitment to democracy in the context of the EU's external relations, ten years after the last conclusions on the subject. In this text, the EU Council considers that there is an urgent need to "provide a global response" to the many challenges facing democracy. "As advocated in the EU's overall strategy, it is also in the Union's strategic interest to support democracy, human rights and the rule of law outside the EU", these conclusions specify. The EU Council agrees "to further develop a common and practical response to these challenges, based on close cooperation between the institutions and the EU Member States".
