30/09/2019 (Agence Europe) – BEUC, the European association representing consumer interests, published on Monday 30 September, an overview of legal actions in the EU against the German manufacturer Volkswagen (VW) since the exposure of the ‘Dieselgate’ scandal four years ago. This report shows, in essence, that European consumers are not treated in the same way as Americans, who benefited from "generous compensation from VW almost immediately". This comparison highlights the weakness of European public and private enforcement systems, according to the organisation. The report comes at a time when the first major German class action lawsuit against the manufacturer was launched in the Brunswick Regional Court on Monday, September 30. At the beginning of April 2019, the European Parliament and the EU Council reached a provisional agreement on a proposal for a European collective redress procedure (see EUROPE 12222/11).
