Trade unions submit their questions to Commissioners-designate

As the hearings of the Commissioners-designate begin on Monday 30 September (see other news), the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) presented a series of questions that it hopes will be asked by MEPs.

Among the most salient demands is the one made to the Commissioner-designate for Employment, Nicolas Schmit, to implement a directive to increase wages and extend coverage of collective bargaining.

To Margrethe Vestager, the Vice President for Digital Technology, they demand that all European workers be granted a "right to disconnect".

The future Commissioner-designate for Migration, Margaritis Schinas and Ylva Johansson, were asked by the unions whether they intended to set up "genuine" European search and rescue operations by putting an end to the criminalisation of NGOs. They especially hope for the creation of legal channels for economic migration.

Finally, with regard to Phil Hogan, future Commissioner-designate for Trade, the unions hope that he will ensure that all future EU trade agreements have a sound and enforceable social and environmental sustainability chapter. Lastly, they hope that the social partners will be consulted in each negotiation, and in particular with a view to a future trade agreement between the Union and the United Kingdom once Brexit is adopted, in order to protect the rights of European workers.
