Negotiations on posts at the head of the European institutions continued at the G20 summit in Osaka, Japan, with a view to reaching an agreement on Sunday 30 June.
"From Osaka I continue my consultations on appointments, including with EU leaders not present at G20", confirmed European Council President Donald Tusk in a tweet on the morning of Friday 28 June, saying he had spoken to 13 European leaders by phone.
The outcome on the allocation of these "super posts" will, however, await the special European summit on Sunday 30 June. "Do not expect white smoke in Osaka", he said at a press conference the same day. "We are getting closer to a solution but are still too far away to be specific".
EU leaders met on the same day for a special coordination meeting.
Mr Trump criticizes Mrs Vestager
The day before, US President Donald Trump commented on the European negotiations, quoting Liberal candidate Margrethe Vestager, the current European Commissioner for Competition.
"You have a woman in Europe, I won't mention her name, she's actually considered to take Jean-Claude's place (...) she hates the United States perhaps worse than any person I've ever met", he said. (Original version in French by Hermine Donceel)
