28/06/2019 (Agence Europe) – On Friday, 28 June, the European Commission found that a Finnish bus company had received €54.2 million in aid in a manner not in accordance with EU state aid rules. It therefore asked Helsinki to recover the money. The aid was granted in the form of a loan and, following a complaint from a third party, the Commission opened an in-depth investigation in January 2016. The Commission found that no private actor would have granted the company a loan under the same conditions and also found that the loan had given the company an unfair economic advantage over its competitors. It therefore concluded that the aid was granted in a manner that was not in accordance with European Union law. As the company's assets have since been sold to a competitor, the new owner will have to pay the amount involved back to the Finnish government. (LT)
