At the invitation of the Romanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the competent ministers will meet in Bucharest on Friday 14 June to discuss urban policy.
The Ministerial Conclusions in the form of a 'Bucharest Declaration' will be adopted, the aim of which is to establish a common framework for urban development in the European Union. This document aims to move towards a strategic framework for the European Union by implementing the urban agenda for the EU on the one hand and the revision of the 2007 Leipzig Charter (see EUROPE 9406/20) on the other.
The meeting will take place in two parts: a first session devoted to the achievements of the urban agenda and a second session focused on the future, with the adoption of the 'Bucharest Declaration'. During this second session, a report from the Commission's Joint Research Centre will be presented, which will draw up 'The future of cities' in the EU.
The Urban Agenda is an initiative launched in 2015 by the European Commission and adopted in 2016 (see EUROPE 11561/2), the aim of which is to ensure better coordination between Member States and cities in order to respond to major current challenges, such as housing, climate change and migration.
