The Romanian Presidency of the Council of the EU has scheduled an exchange of views on external relations in the energy sector at the next meeting of European Energy Ministers in Luxembourg on 25 June.
In a note drafted to prepare for the debate, which will be introduced by the European Commission, the Romanian Presidency of the Council of the EU indicated that it intends to focus discussions on the EU's major partners, i.e. Africa, the United States, China and the Eastern Mediterranean (EastMed).
Moreover, “continued engagement in the Energy Community and modernisation of the Energy Community Treaty, as well as a review of the operation and modernisation of the Energy Charter Treaty, are of crucial importance”, the Romanian Presidency wrote in its note to the Council of the EU.
The Presidency emphasised that the European Commission has integrated 'clean energy transition' policies into its energy dialogues with non-member states and regional or international organisations. The Commission has also systematically raised the issue of greater use of the euro in energy transactions with key international partners, where appropriate (this subject will be discussed during the ministers' working lunch).
In its note, the Romanian Presidency has included a series of questions for ministers and information on the state of energy relations with the major partners (Africa, the United States, China, etc.).
