European Home Affairs Ministers, but also Telecommunications Ministers, took note, on Friday 7 June in Luxembourg, of the report by the EU Counter-Terrorism Coordinator, Gilles de Kerchove, on the risks that 5G technology could pose to internal security (see EUROPE 12270/5).
However, they did not have any discussion on this subject. This was only a presentation of the report and a first-ever item on this subject on the agenda of the Interior Ministers.
As a reminder, the report indicates, among other things, that the security standards of 5G technology may undermine legal wiretapping. In addition, it identifies several risks: the encryption of end-to-end communications and the SIM card, as well as the virtual and fragmented architecture of 5G.
Legislative measures may be necessary, Mr de Kerchove said, although at this stage no such indication has been given by ministers on Friday. (Original version in French by Solenn Paulic)
