Chiefs of Defence agree on new military strategy

The Chairman of the NATO Military Committee, Air Chief Marshal Stuart Peach, announced on Wednesday 22 May that NATO's Chiefs of Defence had agreed on a new military strategy.

We have agreed a Military Strategy. This is the first time for many years, we have done so and it is part of NATO's adaptation process", he announced at a press conference following the meeting of the Chiefs of Defence Staff. The Chiefs of Staff decided in 2017 to instruct the military authorities to review the strategy. This new document was developed by consensus with each ally on an equal footing, according to the Chairman of the Military Committee.

NATO adapts. We continue to revise and review the threats we face, as allies", Mr Peach explained, noting that the Alliance faces "enduring challenges from all strategic directions, state and non-state, military forces, and terrorist, cyber and hybrid”.

Developing our new NATO Military Strategy provides an overarching approach that takes into account the challenging security environment, reinforcing the importance of readiness and our exercises to remain a true deterrent force with speed, depth and breadth", added the Supreme Allied Commander Europe, General Tod D. Wolters. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
