03/04/2019 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission decided on Wednesday 3 April to register the European Citizens' Initiative to “create an objective and impartial evaluation mechanism to verify the application of the European Union’s values by all the Member States” (see other news). The organisers also advocate: - legislation to verify the practical application of national provisions relating to the rule of law; - the proper application of European laws on judicial cooperation in criminal matters (European arrest warrant) and a strengthened role for the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights. The registration of this initiative will take place on 8 April 2019 and will mark the beginning of a twelve-month process during which signatures of support will be collected. If, within one year, the initiative receives one million statements of support, the Commission will have three months to react. (LC)
