03/04/2019 (Agence Europe) – The spokesperson of the European External Action Service denounced, on Tuesday, 2 April, the entry into force, on 3 April, of new measures in Brunei's penal code, a code that follows the strictest sharia law. “Some of the punishments foreseen in the criminal code amount to torture, acts of cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment”, the spokesperson said in a statement. “It is critical that the Government ensures that the implementation of the Penal Code Order does not infringe on human rights and is fully consistent with all international and regional human rights commitments and obligations undertaken by the country”, the spokesperson warned. While the new legislation advocates the death penalty by stoning for homosexuality or adultery, the spokesperson said the EU expects the de facto moratorium on capital punishment to be maintained in the country.
