27/03/2019 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 26 March, the European Commission decided to register a European Citizens' Initiative (ECI) to strengthen the rights of 'uberised' workers. The organisers of this ECI "#NewRightsNow" ask the Commission to create an obligation for digital platforms to pay a guaranteed minimum income to 'freelancers' or 'self-employed' people who regularly work for them. At this stage of the procedure, the Commission did not analyse the initiative on its merits, but only decided on its legal admissibility. The registration of this initiative will take place on 1 April 2019 and will mark the beginning of a twelve-month process during which signatures of support will be collected by its organisers. If, within one year, the initiative collects one million signatures, the Commission will have three months to respond. It can decide either to accept the request or not. (LC)
