€250 million of EU funds for milk and fruit in schools in 2019/2020

The European Commission adopted on Wednesday 27 March the national budget allocations for EU programmes to support the consumption of fruit, vegetables and milk in schools in 2019/2020.

A total of €145 million will be allocated for the distribution of fruit and vegetables to schoolchildren in 2019 and 2020 (including €24.8 million for Germany, €20.8 million for Italy, €17.9 million for France and €16.4 million for Spain) and €105 million for the distribution of milk and dairy products (including €17.1 million for France, €11 million for Poland, €10.8 million for Romania and the same for Germany).

This programme (only Sweden and the United Kingdom do not participate in the fruit and vegetables programme) is complemented by educational measures to help establish healthy eating habits.

The Commission has also published an evaluation report, which shows that for the 2017/2018 school year, around 159,000 schools participated in the EU school programme (255,500 tonnes of fresh fruit and vegetables and 178 million litres of milk were distributed to children). 20 million European children benefited from the programme during the 2017/2018 school year. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
