22/03/2019 (Agence Europe) – European solidarity is intensifying with the victims of the devastating tropical cyclone in Mozambique. At the request of the Mozambican authorities, the EU Civil Protection Mechanism has been activated and several Member States have already offered assistance (Denmark, Germany, Luxembourg, Spain, Italy, Portugal and the United Kingdom) - water purification equipment, emergency medical teams, tents and shelters, hygiene kits, food, satellite telecommunications - or offered to send experts to provide logistical assistance and advice (Germany, Finland, Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Sweden). In a statement, the European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management, Christos Stylianides, "thanks the Member States for their generous support". These civil protection resources are in addition to the €2 million in emergency aid already mobilised by the Commission for Mozambique (see EUROPE 12218/21). (AN)
