22/03/2019 (Agence Europe) – Approved on 27 February (see EUROPE 12204/32), the certificate of registration of Mexican Tequila as a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) in the EU was formally presented on 20 March in Brussels by Agriculture Commissioner Phil Hogan to the Mexican Deputy Foreign Minister, Julián Ventura, and the Director of the Tequila Regulatory Council, Ramón González Figueroa. Mexican alcoholic beverages produced from blue agave are now numbered among the 31 non-Member States geographical indications (food, wine, spirits) registered in the EU. This is the third non-EU spirit drink to be protected, after Peruvian Pisco and Guatemalan Ron (rum). (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
