28/01/2019 (Agence Europe) – The spokesperson of the European External Action Service, Maja Kocijancic, called on Monday 28 January for an investigation into the death of Mher Yegiazarian, after a more than 50 day hunger strike. Vice-president of a small political party, The Armenian Eagles: United Armenia, Mr Yegiazarian was arrested on 4 December on charges of extorting money that was allegedly used for bribes in order to obtain employment or other services. Denying the accusations, he started a hunger strike on 5 December. “We expect the Armenian government to ensure a proper investigation of this case and to take appropriate measures following this”, said Ms Kocijancic. She recalled that the EU is committed to the prohibition of all torture and ill-treatment and to preserve human dignity in any circumstances. (CG)
