28/01/2019 (Agence Europe) – On Sunday evening, 27 January, the European Union expressed its solidarity with the Brazilian people and authorities and its readiness to provide assistance after the breach of a mining dam in Brumadinho (in the south-eastern region of the country) which killed 58 people and left 305 missing, according to the provisional Brazilian civil protection report. “My thoughts are with the families of the victims following the tragic collapse of the Vale 1 dam. I salute the courageous first responders, who are working tirelessly to search and rescue the missing. The EU stands ready to help”, said the European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management on his Twitter account. Assistance can indeed be provided through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism if requested by the Brazilian authorities. (AN)
