Eurydice network presents maps comparing policies and measures for migrant education

The Eurydice network presented an in-depth comparative mapping of the main national policies and measures aimed at the integration of pupils with a migrant background into schools in Europe, in a report published on Thursday 17 January.

In order to obtain an overview of the multiple existing tools and approaches, a study was conducted in 42 education systems of the Eurydice network covering four areas: - access to education; - learning, psychosocial and language support; - the roles of teachers and school heads; - governance.

By providing important information for education and integration practitioners, researchers and policy makers, the report aims to support European cooperation in the education of students with a migrant background.

The integration of these pupils is relevant throughout the European Union, as they tend to perform less well in school than their peers born in the country of origin and often have a more fragile sense of well-being.

"Today’s report is a valuable contribution as it shows what EU Member States are doing to ensure that all students across Europe reach their full potential", said Tibor Navracsics, European Commissioner for Education. He affirmed that education had "an essential role to play in promoting the integration [of pupils with a migrant background], creating a sense of belonging around common values and encouraging them to become active members of our societies".

Currently, in order to help Member States facilitate the integration of students with a migrant background, the EU is carrying out various efforts to increase stakeholder cooperation, in particular through the independent Sirius network, which promotes the social inclusion of children and young people with a migrant background. There are also funding opportunities under the Erasmus+ mobility programme.
