Biofuels, indigenous Indonesians call on European Commission to address harmful effects of palm oil

17/01/2019 (Agence Europe)In an open letter published on Thursday, 17 January, more than 230 indigenous Indonesians representing smallholders, civil society, and various human rights and environmental organisations warned the Commission about the environmental and social impact of palm oil-based biofuels. In particular, they call on the EU to phase out the use of palm oil-based biofuels. A timely request, given that the European Commission, in connection with the adoption of the Renewable Energy Directive II (RED II, see EUROPE 12136), is due to present in early February a delegated act that will set out the criteria for the certification of biofuels with a low risk of indirect land use change (‘Indirect Land Use ChangeILUC) – an act that could prevent the import of palm oil from Indonesia and Malaysia, for example.
