17/01/2019 (Agence Europe) – The spokesperson for the European External Action Service expressed concerns on behalf of the European Union on Thursday 17 January as clashes between rival militias killed several people in Tripoli, despite the ceasefire agreed in September (see EUROPE 12089). “The resumption of fighting in Tripoli is a worrying breach of the ceasefire brokered by the United Nations in September and of the subsequent security arrangements. (...) We call on everyone involved to respect the September ceasefire and put an end to hostilities, to protect civilians and safeguard public and private property”, she said in a statement. According to the spokesperson, the EU supports the efforts of the Libyan Ministry of Interior, in coordination with the United Nations Mission in Libya, to implement the necessary security arrangements and restore security and stability in Tripoli.
