12/12/2018 (Agence Europe) – The European Consumer Organisation (BEUC) is pleased that the Parliament voted on Tuesday 11 December to make public the non-confidential parts of applications submitted by companies applying for authorisation to use pesticides, food additives or GMOs (see EUROPE 12157). "We are glad that the EU Parliament chose to stand by consumers. Public controversies around glyphosate, aspartame or bisphenol A have shaken consumer confidence in the way the EU regulates food safety” said Mrs Goyens, the organisation's Director General. She did, however, provide two caveats to this expression of satisfaction: - the setting up of a board of appeal for industry to contest EFSA confidentiality decisions, which will delay the publication of safety data; - the inclusion of innovative ideas in the list of potential confidential items.
