03/12/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Monday, December 3, the Political Director of the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Oleksii Makeiev, called on Europeans to adopt new sanctions against Russia because of its attitude in the Sea of Azov. “One of the most important tools is the sanctions that the EU can take against Russia, including against Russian ports in the Sea of Azov. Those responsible must be punished,” he explained in the European Parliament's Security and Defence Subcommittee. According to him, sanctions are "the only peaceful instrument at the EU's disposal to put an end to aggressive action” by Moscow. He called for more support and a stronger role for the European Parliament in responding to Russia. No consensus has so far been reached between Member States on the adoption of additional sanctions (see EUROPE 12147). (CG)
