Pre-agreement on an orderly exit of the United Kingdom from the EU is essential “ for the Brexit process to run smoothly and mitigate the risk of a no-deal Brexit, which would be catastrophic for farmers ", EU agricultural organisations and cooperatives ( Copa-Cogeca) said on Thursday 15 November.
Pekka Pesonen, Secretary General of Copa-Cogeca, admits that “there are still uncertainties about the future relationship with the United Kingdom”, but this agreement is essential for the future of our sector, "because we must be able to continue to enjoy free trade after the United Kingdom leaves the EU". He welcomed the fact that 3,000 EU geographical indications were protected in the Brexit Agreement (see EUROPE 12138).
It provides for the protection of intellectual property rights, in particular on geographical indications (protected designations of origin, protected geographical indications, traditional specialities guaranteed and traditional terms for wine) and the continuity of the distribution chain, by regulating the situation of goods placed on the single market before the British withdrawal.
