16/11/2018 (Agence Europe) – The spokesperson of the European External Action Service welcomed, on Friday 16 November, the life sentence for "genocide" of two of the most senior leaders of Democratic Kampuchea, Nuon Chea (92 years old) and Khieu Samphan (87 years old). According to her, this verdict of the Extraordinary Chambers of the Cambodian Courts "made it possible to ensure accountability for the crimes committed under the Khmer Rouge regime from 1975 to 1979". In her statement, the spokesperson said that the EU had been one of the main donors to the Extraordinary Chambers since its inception, providing over €76 million in funding for national and international components of the court and for its important outreach and education programmes.
