Council lawyers doubt legal basis underlying proposal which makes granting of European funds conditional on respect for rule of law

The EU Council's Legal Service has raised doubts about the way in which the European Commission's proposal for a regulation to make European funds conditional on respect for the rule of law has been put together, a source said on Tuesday 30 October, confirming information from Politico. 

Legal experts doubt the Treaty articles used as the legal basis for the legislative proposal, but they did not say that "it was impossible to make this proposal" linking European funds and the rule of law,...
