04/10/2018 (Agence Europe) – On 3 October, European solidarity was stepped up through the EU civil protection mechanism to help the victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Indonesia (see EUROPE 12107). Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Spain and the UK offered means in response to Indonesia’s request for water purification equipment, emergency shelters, generators and other essential supplies, the European Commission stated on Thursday 4 October. The Commission's Emergency Response Coordination Centre is coordinating the offers of assistance. European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides commends "the generosity and solidarity of our member states". Copernicus, the Commission's emergency satellite mapping services, has produced ten maps of the damage and the humanitarian assistance from the Commission and member states to Indonesia comes to a total of €8 million (see EUROPE 12107).
