Margrethe Vestager does not expect to have European commissioner mandate renewed

03/10/2018 (Agence Europe)Speaking in Paris on Wednesday 3 October, European Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager acknowledged it will be difficult to obtain a new mandate for commissioner in 2019.  “My native member state doesn’t seem too enthusiastic about giving me another mandate”, she told the press, adding “and that would be an understatement”. Vestager is a former leader of the Danish Social Liberal Party, today in the opposition.  “The tradition in my country is that it is the biggest party in government that names the commissioner”, said the Danish liberal whose name is doing the rounds in Brussels to succeed Jean-Claude Juncker as head of the European Commission.  The commissioner recently took a stance against the process of appointing head-of-list candidates (“Spitzenkandidat”) for each European political family, ahead of the European elections in May 2019.  (MB)
