28/09/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 28 September, the Eurocities organisation welcomed the fact that the city of Madrid has made a commitment to actively support employment and childcare, two principles in the European Pillar of Social Rights. Marta Higueras, first deputy mayor of Madrid, said “In Madrid, we invest over €20 million annually in training and work experience programmes that reach more than 3,000 long term unemployed people, aiming to bring them back into the labour market”. She added “However, we need a stronger partnership between cities and other levels of governments to make sure the social pillar really helps deliver on employment and social inclusion in Europe”. Eurocities is striving to create a political dynamic amongst its members in an effort to increase the number or pledges made in support of the European Pillar of Social Rights. (PH)
