Panzeri rails against mass death sentences

28/09/2018 (Agence Europe)On Friday 28 September, the chair of the European Parliament's sub-committee on human rights, Pier Antonio Panzeri (S&D, Italy), condemned the Egyptian high-instance court’s recent decision to uphold the final death sentence rulings against 20 people found guilty of participating in the 2013 Kerdasa massacre, in which 14 security officers were killed.  "The Egyptian courts continue to hand down death sentences in mass trials that are indefensible both on procedure and on the merits of the cases against defendants", Panzeri said.  He called on the Egyptian president not to ratify the death sentences and to commute them. He also the called on the Egyptian authorities to bring an immediate end to mass death sentences and to abandon the practice of mass trials.  (CG)
