28/09/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 28 September the Competitiveness Council adopted the regulation introducing the joint European undertaking for high-performance computing (euroHPC). 24 member states, in addition to Norway, will be participating in this initiative as from 2019 (see EUROPE 12100). In a press release, Andrus Ansip, the Commissioner for the Digital Single Market stated "Today, most of our researchers and companies need to go outside of Europe to find the first-class computers they need. The EU cannot afford to lag behind”. EU companies currently consume more than 33% of global super computer resources but only provide 5% of these resources. The EuroHPC undertaking will be operational until the end of 2026 and will have a public budget of € 1 billion, in addition to €400 million from the private sector. Its aim is to deploy a pan-European supercomputing infrastructure and boost research and innovation. Please see the following link for the regulation text: https://bit.ly/2DD2OQL. (MB)
