European Parliament discusses post-Brexit redistribution of tariff rate quotas on EU's WTO list

28/09/2018 (Agence Europe)On Thursday 27 September, the European Parliament’s international trade committee discussed the draft 'Quisthoudt-Rowohl' report on the post-Brexit allocation of tariff rate quotas from the EU's WTO list.  This technical discussion about mostly agricultural quotas remains very politically sensitive.  Among the issues raised by the MEPs were the European Commission’s discretionary power to amend the figures.  The Commission promised on Thursday to do nothing without the approval of the other EU institutions.  If no agreement is reached with the EU's trading partners, the Commission proposes to adjust the figures in order to reduce the risk of disputes at the WTO.  The aim is to adopt the regulation by the end of 2018 so that the raft of implementation acts can then be prepared.  The dossier will be discussed at the European Parliament’s agriculture committee in Strasbourg next week. (HD)
