European Commission could improve its role as guardian of treaties, says Court of Auditors

The European Court of Auditors has submitted a series of recommendations to the European Commission on how to improve its monitoring of the correct application of European Union law, in a 'landscape review' published on Monday 3 September.

The European auditors are aware of the efforts the Commission has made to execute an exercise of this scale and difficulty, due in particular to the increased volume and complexity of EU law and the choices made by the member states when implementing European legislation.

Even so, the Commission could tighten up its role as guardian of the treaties still further by: - adopting the 'Better Regulation' approach in its oversight policy concerning the application of European legislation; - by using the EU budget in a more coordinated fashion when helping the member states to apply EU law; - encouraging the services of the Commission to share the knowledge and expertise of the member states; - taking greater account of the needs and specifics of the member states; - embedding priorities for its legislative oversight responsibilities in a global monitoring management framework; - providing the stakeholders with more aggregate information and analyses.
