03/09/2018 (Agence Europe) – The European Ombudsman is calling for assistance from the European Parliament to put pressure on the Council of the EU to make the latter more transparent during the legislative process (see EUROPE 11960). Given that the Council did not reply within the three-month time limit to recommendations made in February, at the end of August she forwarded the findings of her detailed survey to MEPs, which criticises the Council’s attitude aimed at not registering the positions of member states during discussions on proposals of legislation and making documents of internal meetings public drop by drop. Mid-July, national ambassadors with the EU (Coreper) initiated a debate on a new approach regarding legislative transparency, a debate rekindled after the ruling of the EU General Court (Case T-540/15) (see EUROPE 12067).
