03/09/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Saturday 1 September, the spokesperson for the European External Action Service (EEAS) criticised the decision of the Nicaraguan government the previous day to terminate the presence of the mission of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights after the mission's publication of a report annoying the Ortega regime. "This decision goes against the aim of full accountability for human rights violations and serving justice to the victims of violence", the EEAS spokesperson said in a press release, calling on the Nicaraguan authorities to "seriously" consider the findings of the mission's report and "take urgent action" to implement the report's recommendations. Published on Wednesday 29 August, the UN report denounces the disproportionate use of force in Nicaragua, generalised arbitrary detentions, torture and ill treatment. (MB)
