03/09/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 3 September, the EU called for a cessation of hostilities in Libya. The day before, a state of emergency was decreed in Tripoli and the surrounding area due to violence between rival militia groups that left at least 39 dead. “Libya is experiencing a new wave of unrest and instability. Violence is not the answer to the country's already difficult situation. I call on all parties to stop fighting”, the President of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani, tweeted. This was echoed by the European Commission, whose spokesperson, Carlos Martin Ruiz de Gordejuela, called on all parties immediately to cease all hostilities. “The EU expects all legitimate Libyan actors to rally towards [the] goal” of a lasting political solution. “Violence will only bring more violence”, he warned.
