On Monday 3 September, the European Commission spoke of the Community programme for the distribution of fruit, vegetables and milk in schools (see EUROPE 11840).
For every school year, the programme provides €150 million for fruit and vegetables and €100 million for milk and other dairy products. Although participation in the scheme is voluntary, all member states have chosen to take part, either for all or part of the scheme.
National allocations for the 28 participating member states over the school year 2018-2019 had been approved and adopted by the European Commission in March 2018.
Member states also have the possibility to top up EU aid with national aid. The choice of products distributed is based on health and environmental considerations as well as on seasonality, variety and availability. Member states may promote local or regional purchasing, organic products, short supply chains, environmental benefits and agricultural quality systems. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
