EU and Tirana start preparatory work 12 months before formal opening of negotiations to the EU

On 13 July, European Commissioner for Enlargement Negotiations and Albania's Prime Minister Edi Rama announced the start of preparatory work before the official opening of accession negotiations in June 2019.

The decision of the Foreign Affairs Council on 24 June establishes that the accession negotiations with Albania will only be opened in June 2019 – and on condition that the reforms continue(see EUROPE 12049).  With this outlook, Rama stated: "we're not going to lose 12 months" of...
