10/07/2018 (Agence Europe) – The Joint Declaration of Peace and Friendship signed by Ethiopia and Eritrea (two countries at war for 20 years), on Monday 9 July, was hailed by the EU that same evening as being “an historic and courageous move by Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed”, a move which brings hope. “Breaking a 20-year old deadlock in bilateral relations, it raises unprecedented prospects for reconciliation and paves the way for enhanced regional cooperation and stability in the Horn of Africa”, said EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini, in a press release. She states the EU stands ready to “mobilise the support needed to consolidate the normalisation of relations” between the two countries. (AN)
