Declarations by Matteo Salvini on identifying the Roma in Italy provoke old demons in Parliament

It was indeed a sad sight to behold on Wednesday 4 July when MEPs debated the controversial declarations made by the Italian Minister for the Interior Matteo Salvini on the Roma and Sinti. 

All kinds of rantings and calls to order regarding xenophobic and racist ideas were par for the course. At the heart of the debate: the proposal from the leader of the far right party, La Liga, made on 18 June last on television to identify the Roma living in Italy in an effort to facilitate expulsions...
