18/06/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 14 June, the EU Council transposed the sanctions that were adopted by the United Nations on 7 June imposing a travel ban and assets freeze on six human traffickers operating in Libya. Four of the traffickers are Libyan and two Eritrean. The Libyans include the commander of the coastguard at Zawiya and the head of the oil refinery there. According to the Council's press release, these six people are key figures in human trafficking and migrant smuggling inside and around Libya. This is the first time the UN imposes sanctions on human traffickers. The decision by the UN was the result of the coordinated efforts of several EU members states, according to the Council. The legal acts linked to the EU decision were published on 15 June. (CG)
