18/06/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 15 June, the European Commission approved the planned acquisition of Uniper, a German company active in the energy sector, by Fortum, a Finnish company also present in energy. Following the notification of the transaction on 7 May of this year, the institution had concerns at possible competition distortions on electricity production and the provision of ancillary services in Sweden, financial trading in the Nordic countries and other activities related to energy. Having consulted competitors and clients of the two companies and carried out an in-depth investigation, the Commission considered that the merger was unlikely to raise competition issues on the markets in question and therefore concluded that it was compatible with EU rules on mergers.
