Bulgaria hands ECRIS-TCN on to future Austrian Presidency of EU Council

15/06/2018 (Agence Europe)Three and a half months of negotiations will not have been enough for the Bulgarian Presidency of the EU Council to reach a compromise with the representatives of the European Parliament on the proposal establishing the European criminal records information system (ECRIS) on third country nationals and stateless persons (TCN).  The hopes raised by Sofia in its note of 11 June as to a possible agreement on 19 June were soon disappointed.  On Wednesday 13 June, its compromise proposal (see EUROPE 12031) did not receive the support of the ambassadors of the member states to the EU, and the trialogue was cancelled.  The sticking points remain – the inclusion of people with dual nationality and the insertion of fingerprints in the system (see EUROPE 12011).  The ball is thus passed on to Austria, which will take the relay from the Bulgarian Presidency of the EU Council in July.  (MF)
