The European Commission said on Monday 28 May that the compensation granted by Denmark to Post Danmark to fulfil its public service mission over the period 2017-2019 is in line with EU state aid rules.
In February 2018, Denmark notified plans to compensate Post Danmark, the country’s main postal services provider, for carrying out its universal postal service obligation during the period 2017-2019, including the provision of basic postal services throughout Denmark.
Post Danmark will, through its parent company, receive aid of up to approximately €160 million.
Deeming that the aid in question does not overcompensate Post Danmark’s public service obligation, the Commission says that the measure complies with the Europe Union 2011 state aid rules applying to public service compensation.
The Commission rejected a complaint from the Association for the Danish road transport of goods (ITD) in November 2017 over a number of measures relating to Post Danmark, but is continuing to assess a separate issue raised in the complaint, regarding certain capital injections foreseen in the bilateral agreement between Sweden and Denmark of October 2017.
