In a backdrop to the Energy Infrastructure Forum on 24 May in Copenhagen, Climate Action and Energy Commissioner, Miguel Arias Cañete, witnessed the signing of two agreements for two major infrastructure projects for the Baltic Sea. These projects are eligible for Community support under the status of EU Projects of Common Interest (PCIs): the Gas Interconnector between Denmark and Poland (Baltic-Pipe) and the Gas Interconnector between Poland and Lithuania (GIPL).
The first agreement involves a subsidy for studies into the Baltic Pipe project and aims to enhance diversification of gas sources and increase competition. It will receive financial support under the Connecting Europe Facility programme (CEF), to the tune of €33 million.
The second agreement involves a final investment decision for the GIPL and aims to to put an end to the isolation of the Baltic Sea region's gas system and integrate it with the EU internal energy market. It will also receive financial support of €276 million under the CEF. (Original version in French by Emmanuel Hagry)
