25/05/2018 (Agence Europe) – The meeting of member states’ ambassadors to the European Union (Coreper) on Friday 25 May was not able to come to agreement on the social aspects, the most politically sensitive, of the first mobility package: posting of transport workers, cabotage, drivers’ rest and driving times and smart tachograph. The failure of the talks does not come as any great surprise given the latest political developments, with the states of the Road Alliance (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland) and the countries of Central, Eastern and peripheral Europe still holding widely differing positions (see EUROPE 12020). Only the progress reports, then, will be put to ministers when the Council meets in the “transport” format in Luxembourg on 7 June. EUROPE will report on the detail of this meeting in its next bulletin. (LT)
