Inter-institutional agreement on new eu-LISA mandate

On Thursday 24 May, negotiators from the European Parliament and EU Council came to an agreement on the new mandate for the eu-LISA European agency dealing with the operational management of large-scale information systems in the area of freedom, security and justice (see EUROPE 11819, 11921).

The European agency's mandate has been strengthened in order for it to manage the future interoperability of different European information systems such as the Schengen Information System (SIS), the future European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) for authorising people from third countries to travel visa-free, the European Criminal Records Information System (ECRIS), the EU fingerprint database (Eurodac) or the entry-exit system for travellers from third countries.

Interoperability should enable authorised forces from the member states to  carry out just one search to find information on an individual that is contained in these different systems.

The new eu-LISA mandate should especially enable technical solutions for interoperability to be developed and technical assistance to be brought to member states.  The European agency will be empowered to develop common data quality indicators.  (Original version in French by Solenn Paulic)
