25/05/2018 (Agence Europe) – When asked to comment on the failure of the South Sudan peace talks in Addis Ababa following the rejection on Wednesday 23 May of the agreement proposed by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the EU expressed concern on Friday 25 May and restated its support for IGAD. “The failure of the parties to make the necessary compromise in the interest of the people of South Sudan is disappointing”, said the European External Action Service spokesperson, stressing that the parties now had to demonstrate willingness to resume the peace process. “We do continue to support the efforts of IGAD to address the situation”, she added. She stated, as the Council had made clear in April, that the EU remains ready to apply appropriate measures to those obstructing the political process and that the “EU remains extremely concerned by the humanitarian situation and the violence”.
