23/05/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 28 May, the European Commission will unveil draft legislation on supplementary protection certificates (SPC). This proposal, which was adopted by the College of Commissioners on Wednesday 23 May, will be accompanied by an impact assessment on intellectual property incentives. SPC certificates for medicines, covered by EU Regulation 469/2009, will compensate for the delay between obtaining a patent and authorisation to market a particular product. The future proposal will aim to ensure fair conditions for European medicine manufacturers and their counterparts outside the EU, said Margaritis Schinas. They will strengthen innovation, preserve jobs in Europe and ensure that patients have access to new treatments as soon as possible. (SPj)
